UPDATE: A picture of a 190!
Okay, so I want a 1988 190e. (not this one, its red) It’s the 2.3 litre engine, 141,000 miles, and it’s cheap. That’s about all I know.
This is where you come in! Please share with me everything you know abut this car, and your opinion on weather or not to make the purchase. Thank you very much people of oppo.

Well I’m always wary of reasons for sale. He’s done with college so he doesn’t need it anymore? Did he get a job in new York city or something? Most Americans need.a car...

I’ve never owned one but these Mercs have a reputation for being pretty bulletproof in general. That said, this one seems to have some mystery issues (gunk in the lines?) But it does look decently clean. I might take a chance on it if I were looking. It’s hard to go wrong at that price. Would be nicer if it were a manual, though.

Mankato! Those are my old stomping grounds!
I can’t remember ever working on one myself to be honest, they almost entirely stopped coming in to dealers before my time. But, they are very polarizing to technicians. Some guys love them and have nothing bad to say. Some guys think they’re garbage and hate them. I have heard evaporators and window regulators can be problematic, and that engine may be prone to timing chain issues IIRC. From what I’ve heard, the 2.6 is supposed to be much better.

I have a 2.6, but the 2.3 is fairly similar. These cars take very specific spark plugs, fuel filter and/or pump should be changed as, ovp relay and fuel pump relay. Distributor cap and rotor should be also changed, then from there basic maintenance like brakes and oil changes and you should be good. Also if he means gunk in fuel lines, don’t buy it, you’ll end up buying new injectors(k-jet).
Mine lowered on springs and bilsteiin shocks

So how much do the injectors go for? And could I do them myself? If I bought the car I would do all work myself. Could I not just run seafoam through it? Do you think it’s for sure the injectors? I just really like the car and it’s really damn cheap and looks super clean! Anything else you can tell me about the cars? Thanks for the help!

Seafoam doesn’t work well with this type of fuel injection. The injectors are mechanical and open up on pressure. Only way to clean them is with a bench tester cleaner from Mercedes Source(also has a lot of diys for these cars). New injectors last I checked go for about 60 a piece. What I would recommend is to pass on it. If It doesn’t run right you’ll end up chasing it forever. Also I would look for a 2.6, parts are a lot more plentiful. The 2.3 is just painfully slow, not that the 2.6 is a rocket ship either. But if you feel that the car is a good deal I would take it to a well known merc tech that has worked on these older benzes, and have him run his finger over it.

It’s cheap, eh?
You know what they say, “there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes-Benz.
Having said that, Mercs of this era were built like tanks but the car is almost three decades old. No matter how well-built, age will have taken its toll.
Why not the W124 instead?
